Jayson's Story
Jayson Berry grew up in a minister's family in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a typical and talented teenager who loved sports, music, friends, and family. He was loved by his own family and church community. However, after about a year in college, during a low period in his life, he got caught in the cultural, and political upheavals of 1994.

In November of 1994, at the age of 21, Jayson made a terrible, life-altering decision. He and another young man committed carjacking crimes. In the commission of these crimes, innocent people were traumatized and the life of an innocent young man was taken. This incident was a shock to all who knew and loved Jayson.

But, like the prodigal son, Jayson leaned on his upbringing to find his way to restoration and redemption. He was not charged with the young man's death but took full responsibility for his part in the events that led to it. Although he was 21 years old and a first-time offender, he was punished under the new, draconian Crime Bill of 1994. In a plea deal, he was given two 25-year, mandatory minimum sentences for conspiracy to commit carjacking and weapon possession. The sentence was to be served consecutively, with no appeal and no chance of parole. Legal advocates believe this sentence was excessive for the charges. In 1995, Jayson received the equivalent of a life sentence for carjacking. Surrendering to God, Jayson took his punishment and began his long road to redemption.
Jayson's Impact
Jayson's impact as a mentor and motivator to inmates is impressive. He helps people turn their lives around! Some of these fellow inmates have become like family and “sons" to Jayson's own family. They too, are passionate that Jayson deserves a second chance.
