Positive Directions is a project of the New Horizons Foundation. Its purpose is to help people overcome difficult circumstances, through resilience, restoration and renewal of their purpose. Positive Directions targets the justice impacted community where thousands of individuals and families in Georgia and across the nation are struggling to overcome its effect. To help reduce the challenges of incarceration and reentry, we provide positive psychology coaching, Christian discipleship counseling, support groups and training.

​​​​​Positive Directions began with the story of a young man named Jayson Berry.

His life and purpose was restored, and renewed after his own encounter with the criminal justice system. He is serving time for his involvement in a crime of violence. After admitting his wrongs, he made amends with those he harmed. After acting on the advice of a former inmate, and with support of family and friends, Jayson used his time wisely prison. His life modeled resilience, restoration and preparation for re-entry.  He clung to the belief that against all odds, he should move his life forward to a new future, and not backward to his past or failure. Jayson determined that his life would move in a positive direction.

In this spirit, he and fellow inmate Tavorias (now released) dreamed of creating a non-profit organization to help inmates and their families cope with incarceration and reentry. And to help make their dream a reality, Jayson's parents, Jane and Richard Berry, life-long ministers and counselors committed themselves to the cause. For almost 30 years, the Berrys have quietly but effectively supported not only their own son but other inmates and their families who live in the shadow and shame of incarceration. They are highly effective coaches and mentors. With a small team of directly impacted and like-minded people, they are building on their past work to expand the reach and impact of Positive Directions.
